The bill passed 37 votes to 14 in the upper house this afternoon and will now go to Governor Malcolm.

The legislation includes a six-month post-birth period during which any report of a baby's sex will be voluntary and self-identified.

The amended bill does not change other provisions in the legislation that relates to obtaining sex information, such as the 14-day post-birth window.
The legislation also increases the penalty for non-compliance.
The bill also proposes to collect gender information on the fetus from about 13 weeks into a pregnancy.
The change was proposed in 2012 and was strongly opposed by some pro-life advocates.
It was introduced in April 2013 in the upper house by the government's minority leader, Steve Trevoren.
The law came to a head in a protracted parliamentary debate last year, after a solicitor for Planned Parenthood - a large provider of reproductive health services in Victoria - accidentally included information on gender in a report on fetal death.
